Apple
Malus domestica
A cultivated fruit tree with spring blossom and apples that vary widely in size, colour and flavour. Edible fruit flesh is used fresh or cooked; the cultivar affects ripening and storage.
Native range
Central Asia; cultivated worldwide, with many hybrids and cultivars.
Typical season
Broad late-summer and autumn picking reference for southern Ontario. Stored apples being available year-round does not mean a tree has fruit year-round.
Identification
Compare the apple, its calyx, toothed leaves and tree together. Crab apples are a related small-fruited group already in the catalogue. Seeds are not a foraging ingredient. Ask permission before picking from a garden or orchard.
