Black walnut

Juglans nigra

A large tree with long compound leaves and round nuts inside thick green husks. The kernel is edible, but husking, shelling and drying take work. This is a tree-nut food and is unsuitable for people with relevant allergies.

Native range

Eastern North America, including southern Ontario.

Typical season

Autumn nut-fall reference. Collection is followed by processing; fallen or mouldy nuts are not automatically usable.

Identification

Compare many pointed leaflets, the round husk and deeply ridged hard shell. Photograph nuts and leaves together. Husks can stain skin and are not the edible part; do not confuse walnuts with horse chestnuts or buckeyes.
