Blackberry
Rubus spp. · Allegheny blackberry reference: Rubus allegheniensis
A cane shrub with toothed leaflets and fruits composed of many small drupelets. Ripe blackberry fruits keep their central receptacle, unlike the hollow centre of a picked raspberry. Species and garden cultivars vary.
Native range
Rubus allegheniensis: eastern North America. Other blackberries and cultivars have different origins.
Typical season
Broad summer reference; weather and cultivated varieties can shift the season.
Identification
Compare cane prickles, leaflets, flowers and ripe fruit together. Rubus allegheniensis is one regional reference, not a species assignment for every blackberry. Do not confuse a smooth, separate dark berry with an aggregate blackberry fruit.
