Lemon balm
Melissa officinalis
A lemon-scented perennial that can persist and spread on open ground and disturbed edges. Identified young leaves and flowers are used for tea or flavouring. Record wild-growing patches rather than planted herb beds.
Native range
Mediterranean regions to central Asia. It also grows outside cultivation in southern Ontario.
Typical season
Ontario's crop profile recommends leafy harvests before flowering and allows repeat harvests in established plantings. Planting date and regrowth matter more than a fixed monthly calendar.
Identification
Compare leaf shape, opposite arrangement, square stems and axillary pale flowers. Lemon scent supports but does not establish identity. Do not substitute another aromatic mint-family plant. This profile describes food seasoning, not medicinal treatment or concentrated essential-oil use; ask the garden owner before picking.
