Mulberry
Morus spp.
A deciduous tree with toothed leaves and elongated fruits made up of many small drupelets. Ripe fruit can be pale, red or almost black; colour alone does not distinguish the species.
Native range
Morus alba: China. Morus rubra: eastern North America. The species at this spot has not been established.
Typical season
Broad summer reference for the Toronto launch area; species and local conditions affect timing.
Identification
Compare white mulberry (Morus alba) with red mulberry (Morus rubra). Leaf texture, leaf undersides and young twigs help distinguish them; hybrids also occur. Photograph leaves and fruit together. Unripe fruit and the milky sap are not food.
