Nannyberry
Viburnum lentago
A native shrub or small tree with white spring flower clusters and blue-black fruits. The ripe fruit's pulp is edible and surrounds a single large flattened stone. Fruit also supports birds and other wildlife.
Native range
Northeastern and central North America, including Ontario.
Typical season
Broad autumn reference for ripe fruit; old fruit may remain later and still needs a condition check.
Identification
Compare opposite finely toothed leaves, flattened stones and clustered fruit. Photograph leaves and fruit together; many shrubs bear dark berries. Do not assign other Viburnum species to this profile or infer edibility from colour alone.
