Serviceberry (Juneberry)
Amelanchier spp.
A shrub or small tree with white spring flowers and small fruits that ripen from red to purple. Ripe fruit is eaten fresh or made into preserves. Several serviceberry species and garden hybrids occur locally.
Native range
Amelanchier species occur across temperate North America, Europe and Asia; the local arborea and laevis references are eastern North American.
Typical season
Early summer reference in the launch area; individual trees and cultivars vary.
Identification
Photograph the finely toothed leaves, flowers and fruit with its small calyx crown. Compare Amelanchier arborea, A. laevis and planted relatives; this broad profile does not resolve the species. Do not identify an unknown berry by colour alone.
