Strawberry
Fragaria spp.
A low-growing plant with three toothed leaflets, runners and usually white flowers. The red fruit carries its small seed-like achenes on the outside.
Native range
Fragaria virginiana: North America. Garden strawberry is a cultivated hybrid of species with North and South American origins.
Typical season
Early summer reference; everbearing cultivars can fruit later.
Identification
Compare wild strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) with garden strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa). Photograph flowers, leaves and fruit together; size alone cannot resolve a species or cultivar.
