Cherry
Prunus spp.
A flowering tree with toothed leaves and round, fleshy fruits containing a single stone. Sweet and sour cherries are different species; ornamental cherries can look similar.
Native range
Sweet and sour cherries have Eurasian origins. Other Prunus species are native to North America; the broad label does not establish which grows here.
Typical season
Summer reference for the Toronto launch area; cultivar and weather affect ripening.
Identification
Sweet cherry is Prunus avium; sour cherry is Prunus cerasus. Compare leaves, flowers, fruit and tree form to identify a species or cultivar. Cherry stones and other plant parts are not food.
