Raspberry
Rubus spp. · red raspberry reference: Rubus idaeus
Raspberries grow on canes and bear soft fruits made up of many drupelets. Ripe raspberries detach from their central receptacle, leaving a hollow centre.
Native range
Rubus idaeus: northern Europe and Asia. North American red raspberries are also treated as Rubus strigosus or a subspecies in some references. Species identity at this spot remains open.
Typical season
Summer reference; autumn-bearing cultivars can fruit later.
Identification
Rubus idaeus is a red raspberry reference; other species and cultivated hybrids occur. Compare cane prickles, leaflets, flowers and ripe fruit. Fruit colour alone is insufficient.
